The Power of a Lullaby

Our middle child had a rough infancy. Our nights and my days were filled with trying to soothe him; he had colic in the worst way. I remember holding and rocking him at 3:00 a.m., not yet having been to bed. He was squirming and crying, and I was in tears, not knowing what to do. I then began singing “There’s Just Something About that Name” hoping the song’s “something” was peace and quiet! He kept crying, but the words and melody brought calm and peace to my soul.

Braham’s lullaby wafting through the speakers in a hospital seems to have the same effect. In the midst of suffering and dying, that simple tune blankets us with joy. Makes me smile every single time.

No matter how rough and tough you are, when an infant is placed in your arms, you become a big ball of gooey softness. Why is that? The best I can figure out is that babies represent life and innocence: two concepts we adults sometimes lose track of, yet desire. An infant somehow restores our faith in humanity, and we do everything we can to protect that little bundle of squeaks and squirms.

The word “lullaby” means to calm, to soothe, to quiet. What is your lullaby that brings serenity, calmness and quiet when the chaos begins to overtake your soul? How do you regain your sense of life and innocence?

By the way, innocence is not equivalent to ignorance; the two words are orthogonal, unrelated. Innocence means unacquainted with evil; ignorance means unaware. We can be aware of evil, yet not welcome it into our hearts, no matter how difficult it is to keep it out.

If only Braham’s lullaby could interrupt our day and usher in that joy of new life and purity of soul. Maybe we would have a kinder, gentler world.

Here are the lyrics in case you want to sing to yourself:

Lullaby, and good night
You’re your mother’s delight
Shining angels beside
My darling abide.
Soft and warm is your bed
Close your eyes and rest your head
Soft and warm is your bed
Close your eyes and rest your head.

Sleepyhead, close your eyes
Mother’s right here beside you
I’ll protect you from harm
You will wake in my arms
Guardian angels are near
So sleep on, with no fear
Guardian angels are near
So sleep on, with no fear.

  1. Wonderfully written abd beautifully heartfelt. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy while I read it. It is so true that simply being in the presence of pure innocence softens our hearts and fills us with love and adoration.

Your favorite justification seemed to be on the

Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
