Piper’s Pocket

The combination of children and Christmas decorations always results in excitement, and this year was no different for the Noble children. Mom and dad assembled the tree, and the children began hanging ornaments before the last section of the tree was in place. While everyone was busy with the tree, Piper Grace was eyeing the box containing the crèche components: Mary, Joseph, a sheep, a couple of cows, the camels, the trio of wise men, and a few shepherds. However, it was baby Jesus that caught her eye. Looking around the room, the five-year-old chose her moment to quickly snatch the figurine and discreetly slide it into her pocket.

As the crèche was being assembled several minutes later, everyone began asking, Where’s baby Jesus? Did we lose baby Jesus?  Did we forget to put Jesus back in the box last year?

Before accusations over who lost baby Jesus made their debut, older brother simply said, “Piper has Jesus in her pocket.”

All eyes pinned Piper Grace to the place where she stood with her hand in her pocket. Slowly she withdrew the figurine and clutched it to her chest. “He’s so cute; I just wanted him. I like Him!”

Isn’t that analogous with humanity? We take Jesus out of the manger or off the cross, or we leave him in the tomb, whichever suits our lifestyle, whichever fulfills our purpose for Him. Oblivious to His purpose for us, we “like” Jesus and keep Him in a box until just the right time: Christmas, Easter, times of tragedy, tumultuous life events, illness, etc. Sometimes, we go as far as carrying Him around in a pocket like a good luck charm, but He doesn’t belong anywhere except in the manger, on the cross, out from the tomb, and on the throne in our hearts.

Keep Jesus in your heart, not your pocket. Talk to Him every day. Read His Word and discover why he was a baby in a manger, a rebel in His society, a criminal beaten and hung on a cross, and a victor over death and the grave.

Spoiler alert – He did it all for you. His purpose for your life makes your plans look like a prune on a pastry tray.

Jesus is healing, peace, strength, comfort, and wisdom; He is our Light and Truth for every single day of the year. So, go ahead and take Him out the box or your pocket and put Him where He belongs.

“ . . . in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” ~ John 16:33b

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” ~James 1:17
